SUMMARY:Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action: Uniting for a Future Without Cervical Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action: Uniting for a Future Without Cervical Cancer\nDate: November 17\, 2025 \nThe Queensland Medical Women’s Society (QMWS) proudly joins the global movement to support the Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action\, commemorating the landmark launch of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer. This annual event unites advocates\, healthcare providers\, and communities to raise awareness and drive action towards eliminating this preventable disease. \nWhy Cervical Cancer Elimination Matters\nCervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide\, with an estimated 660\,000 new cases and 350\,000 deaths in 2022 alone. Almost all cases (99%) are linked to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection\, a common virus transmitted through sexual contact. Yet\, with effective prevention\, screening\, and treatment\, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer. \nAustralia Leading the Way\nResearch shows that Australia is on track to become the first country to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2035\, thanks to the successful implementation of HPV vaccination and regular cervical screening programs. Since the introduction of the National Cervical Screening Program in 1991\, cervical cancer mortality rates have halved\, setting an inspiring example for global health initiatives. \nA Call to Action\nThe path to elimination requires a comprehensive approach: \n\nVaccination: Ensuring widespread access to HPV vaccination for girls and boys.\nScreening: Promoting regular cervical screening to detect and treat precancerous lesions.\nTreatment: Guaranteeing timely access to effective treatment and palliative care for women diagnosed with cervical cancer.\n\nNo woman should die from cervical cancer. By raising awareness\, supporting vaccination and screening\, and advocating for equitable healthcare access\, we can eliminate cervical cancer within a generation. \nJoin the Movement\nQMWS invites you to stand with us this November 17 as we amplify the call to action\, share knowledge\, and empower communities to make cervical cancer history. Together\, we can pave the way for a future where no woman is left behind.

SUMMARY:Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide
DESCRIPTION:Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide\nDate: May 23\, 2025 \nThe Queensland Medical Women’s Society (QMWS) proudly supports Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide — a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about obstetric fistula\, a devastating childbirth injury that continues to affect thousands of women and girls each year. Caused by prolonged\, obstructed labor without access to timely\, high-quality medical care\, obstetric fistula results in chronic health issues\, social isolation\, and deepening poverty. Alarmingly\, 90% of pregnancies involving fistula end in stillbirth. \nThis year’s theme underscores the urgent need for equitable access to quality maternal healthcare\, social reintegration\, and long-term investment in strengthening health systems. QMWS is committed to amplifying awareness and advocating for the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula\, supporting local events and activities — stay tuned for event details coming soon. \nLet’s come together to raise our voices and help break the cycle of obstetric fistula worldwide. \n\n\n\nAbout the Campaign to End Fistula\nLaunched in 2003 by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and its partners\, the global Campaign to End Fistula aims to make obstetric fistula as rare in developing countries as it is in the developed world. The campaign focuses on prevention\, surgical repair\, and the social reintegration of those affected. Despite remarkable progress\, achieving the goal of eliminating fistula by 2030 demands urgent action\, increased resources\, and strengthened collaboration across governments\, healthcare providers\, and communities. \nWhy Awareness Matters\nObstetric fistula is not just a medical condition but a stark reminder of systemic inequalities in maternal health. Prevention is possible through actions such as delaying the age of first pregnancy\, ending harmful traditional practices\, and ensuring timely access to skilled obstetric care. However\, challenges such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated healthcare disparities\, making the fight to end fistula more pressing than ever. \nDid You Know? \n\nNearly half a million women and girls worldwide live with obstetric fistula\, with thousands of new cases occurring annually.\nFor every maternal death\, 20-30 women experience childbirth injuries that drastically affect their quality of life.\nSince 2003\, over 140\,000 fistula repair surgeries have been supported by UNFPA\, and more than 12\,000 women have received social reintegration support between 2018 and 2023.\n\nBy raising awareness and advocating for change\, we can help prevent obstetric fistula\, improve access to quality maternal healthcare\, and restore dignity to those affected.

SUMMARY:World Ovarian Cancer Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:World Ovarian Cancer Day — Raising Awareness TogetherDate: May 8\, 2025 \nThe Queensland Medical Women’s Society (QMWS) proudly supports World Ovarian Cancer Day — a global initiative to raise awareness about ovarian cancer\, the most lethal of the female cancers. With no reliable screening test and symptoms often mistaken for less serious conditions\, ovarian cancer is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage\, making early awareness and education crucial. \nQMWS is committed to amplifying awareness and advocating for improved research and funding. We’ll be supporting local events and activities in recognition of this important day — stay tuned for event details coming soon. \nLet’s come together to stand in solidarity with patients\, families\, and healthcare professionals working tirelessly in the fight against ovarian cancer. \nEstablished in 2013 by a group of leaders from ovarian cancer advocacy organizations around the world\, May 8 – World Ovarian Cancer Day\, is the one day of the year we globally raise our voices in solidarity in the fight against ovarian cancer. \nWhile the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition works on many fronts\, World Ovarian Cancer Day is our flagship awareness-raising initiative\, and is the key date in our calendar. Supported by over 200 organizations from around the world\, our social media reach grows exponentially every year. Our partner organizations\, as small as kitchen table-based patient advocacy groups in rural communities\, to national healthcare associations based in major metropolitan areas\, all come together as one to raise awareness about the disease. \nOver the first twelve years\, World Ovarian Cancer Day has grown from its humble start as an idea around a table to an international movement\, in over 50 languages and activity in 95% of the world’s countries. WOCD2024 saw an increase of followers across all channels\, and above-average engagement on all social media posts. Facebook and Instagram saw significant growth in reach over 2023\, with an amazing 227% growth on Instagram alone. \nOverview\n‘Ovarian cancer’ is not a singular diagnosis\, rather it is an umbrella term for a multitude of different types of cancer that affect the ovaries\, fallopian tubes\, and the primary peritoneal cavity. It is estimated that there are more than 30 different types of ovarian cancer\, and there is a very wide variation in incidence and outlook in terms of the different types. \nOvarian cancer is the most lethal of the female cancers for which there is no reliable screening test\, and every person assigned female at birth is at risk.  With delays in diagnoses due to this lack of screening and because symptoms are often confused with other\, less severe\, illness\, most people are diagnosed once the cancer has already spread\, making it more difficult to treat. While every woman is at risk\, ovarian cancer is overlooked and underfunded.
