2023 QMWS May Dinner Recap

Thank you all for attending the 2023 QMWS May dinner. We very much enjoyed the inspiring presentation by Dr Johanna Skinner which highlighted how the art of writing can be a support during our medical career.

We are grateful to the generous support of our sponsor Avant Mutual. Hopefully their ‘crazy’ socks will be used on the #CrazySocksforDocs day on June 2nd. Sponsorship ensures that we can offer an affordable dinner, especially for our students and have a professional Zoom recording of the presentation.

It was wonderful to come together again in person and having the opportunity to connect with those that attended via Zoom. QMWS is the voice of medical women across the whole of Queensland, and we will continue to improve our online presence to ensure that everyone who cannot attend in person will be able to enjoy our events as well.

Please let us know if you know of any doctors or practices outside of Southeast Queensland that would like to join us via Zoom that we have not reached yet.

During the evening we commemorated our friend, colleague and respected member of our community, A/Prof Brigid Hickey. A tribute to her person and life can be found on the RANZCR website. If you are able and interested – please consider donating to the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

Dr Catherine Yelland, our AFMW representative, spoke about whether QMWS and/or AFMW should craft an official statement with regards to the proposed ‘Voice to Parliament’ referendum. We will be in contact with our membership to inquire about your opinion.

Dr Lydia Pitcher updated us on the three NCWQ (National Council of Women of Queensland) bursaries that will be awarded in conjunction with the Queensland Medical Women’s Society. Applications close Monday 5 June 2023. QMWS looks forward to receiving applications especially from medical women in their final year as medical students and recent graduates. You can donate to the QMWS member bursary through the QMWS website.
