Introducing Dr Shiney Seo
It is an honour to be the inaugural recipient of the Quota/NCWQ Dr Laurel Macintosh OBE Memorial Bursary. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege and opportunity to honour Dr Laurel Macintosh OBE as a future female Ophthalmologist aspiring to follow in her inspirational footsteps.
I was born in South Korea and grew up in Brisbane since I was five-years-old. One of the core values I was raised with was to always endeavour to make the most of my opportunities and give my best go. As a result, throughout the years I have been fortunate to achieve numerous experiences that I hold pride in, including representing Australia several times at international competitions such as IYPT and IJSO. I have published academic papers and presented at numerous international journals and conferences, and received several academic awards throughout my education.
I have a passion for teaching budding doctors and Ophthalmologists, as well as advocating for my peers and community. My future aspiration is to continue my devotion to medicine, teaching and advocacy for the rest of my career.
Congratulations Shiney!
Acknowledgements
Dr Macintosh was a trail blazer for working women and in particular Medical Women. She remained interested and involved in the activities of QMWS and AFMW, including the recent Purple Bush Medicine Leaves Bursary event in July 2022.
She was a founding member of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists in 1977 and held executive positions in multiple Women’s and Medical Organisations throughout her life, including QMWS President 1988-1990. She was born in rural New South Wales, studied medicine in Sydney, and did specialist training in London, joining the New South Wales Medical Women’s Society before moving to Queensland for her career.
Dr Macintosh was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and the Australian Centenary Medal in 2001, as well as Life Membership of AMAQ in 1996 and QMWS in 2004. She had a strong commitment to care for the most disadvantaged, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, establishing rural outreach clinics for children with Low Vision throughout Queensland.
This inaugural bursary is jointly sponsored by Quota International and NCWQ. In memory of Dr Laurel MacIntosh OBE, the bursary honours the commitment Laurel had for both organisations. The focus of this bursary is to assist a female medical graduate who is undertaking specialist training to become an ophthalmologist.
We encourage you to listen to Dr MacIntosh’s interview by Sandy Smith for NCWQ from 2021.
