QMWS strongly supports professional development, including participating in international conferences, networking with both medical and women’s groups, and mentoring opportunities to further members’ aspirations in the medical field. Inspirational role models and mentoring opportunities are instrumental in inspiring, shaping and supporting extraordinary careers. This bursary supports female medical students’ involvement in local and international conferences and networking opportunities, so that they may reach their full potential, achieve their dreams, and work towards truly equitable health outcomes for all.
We invite you to contribute to the QMWS Bursary.
Your kind donation will support our ongoing contribution to Queensland medical women students. Your donation directly contributes toward the QMWS Bursary funds. The other two bursaries are fully funded by our kind sponsors – Mater Health and AMAQ.

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of QMWS, the NCWQ QMWS Student Bursary Program was established in 2019.
QMWS continues to promote the health and welfare of all Australians, particularly women and children. The bursary program supports female medical students, recent graduates and those in need in Queensland who are passionate about health equity and gender equity in medicine.
There are two casual vacancies within the AFMW Council: Treasurer & MWIA National Coordinator. Interested members can email QMWS (president@qmws.org.au) or the AFMW Secretary directly (secretary@afmw.org.au) with a brief statement indicating expression of interest by close of business 8 November 2024.
The Queensland Medical Women’s Society August Dinner was an inspiring evening featuring Dr. Clare Boothroyd’s insightful presentation on balancing careers and fertility, which sparked meaningful discussions among attendees. Dr. Chloe Hang also shared exciting updates on the upcoming QMWS Centennial celebrations, making the event both forward-looking and deeply connected to our Society’s legacy.
The QMWS100 centennial working group made significant strides at our September meeting, welcoming Dr. Zelle Hodge and Jane Connolly, who contributed invaluable expertise toward plans for a commemorative book and quilt celebrating medical women’s achievements. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 1 October 2024, at 1 pm in the Emeritus Professor Mary Mahoney Boardroom, Herston Mayne Medical School. All interested members are encouraged to join the preparations for the QMWS centennial celebration by contacting the QMWS100 subcommittee at qmws100@qmws.org.au.
At our third meeting of QMWS 100: Counting Down to 100 Years, Dr Lydia Pitcher, Dr Kathryn Mainstone, Dr Chloe Hang and Dr Barbara Woodhouse continued to explore the rich history preserved in the QMWS archives. Our next meeting will be on the 3rd of September 2024 at 1 pm, in the Emeritus Professor Mary Mahoney Boardroom, Herston Mayne Medical School. Congratulations to Dr Shiney Seo for being named the inaugural recipient of the 2024 Quota Brisbane/NCWQ Bursary, in honour of Dr Laurel Macintosh OBE! Dr Seo is an Ophthalmology Registrar who has a passion for teaching budding doctors and Ophthalmologists, as well as advocating for her peers and community.
