QMWS President Ira making presentations at the Christmas Party

Thank you from QMWS President [December 2022]

As we approach the end of 2022, I would like to thank you all on behalf of QMWS, for a wonderful year. We recently had our very successful 2022 QMWS Christmas party at the beautiful Medley Café in Kangaroo Point. It was lovely so many familiar and new faces could attend, and we would like to thank Queensland X-Ray for sponsoring our Christmas party.

Traditionally this is the time when we celebrate the University of Queensland QMWS prizes and the QMWS bursary winners.

We heard from medical student Daniella Bradshaw, who received the Jean and Joyce Stobo Memorial Prize for the highest overall marks in year 2 examinations of UQ medical school and the two Lilian Cooper Prize recipients, Sivagowri Somasundaram and Isabella Brainsbury for the highest GPA score overall of the UQ medical training program. (Read more about the UQ Prize initiative and watch the 2021 Recipients presentation videos.)

Our Bursary team Drs Lydia Pitcher and Kathryn Mainstone, have worked hard with Ms Kathy Cavanaugh of the National Council of Women in Queensland (NCWQ), and we now have three bursaries.

This year’s Bursary recipients:

  • Sarah Gaukroger – Recipient of the 2022 QMWS Bursary
  • Lucinda Connolly – Recipient of the 2022 AMAQ (QMWS) Professor Tess Cramond Memorial Bursary, and
  • Julia-Rose Satre – Recipient of the 2022 Mater Health (QMWS) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bursary.

For more information on our bursary winners, click here.

We would like to express our gratitude to the NCWQ and the sponsors AMAQ and Mater Health.

Our $1000 QMWS bursary was previously funded by the proceeds of our raffles, however we now have a donations button on our website. I hope you will take this opportunity to contribute.

We were delighted that Dr Sarah Springer, the 2021/2022 AFMW Purple Bush Medicine leaves bursary winner could attend our Christmas party. Sarah made a very powerful impression, informing us how these bursaries support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical women and she is an inspiration for all medical women.

We are in the process of updating our website where you will be able to find more information on our events, photos, and videos. In the meantime, please follow our social media channels:

We hope you have a wonderful festive season and we look forward to seeing you at our 2023 AGM on 23rd February. Please don’t forget t0 sign up or renew your membership.
