Attending Mentors

Dr Ira van der Steenstraten

Dr Ira van der Steenstraten was born in The Netherlands where she trained as a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and family/systems therapist. She has over 25 years of professional experience and worked in a variety of medical and therapeutic settings as a consultant psychiatrist. Currently working as a Life Coach, Ira is the founder and director of Breeze Life Coaching (www.breezelifecoaching.com), which specializes in the prevention and early intervention of mental health problems. She is an internationally recognised and invited speaker that has developed several innovative Mindfulness, Resilience and Wellbeing programs for both adults and children.

Ira is passionate about doctors’ health and wellbeing. She has a position on the management committee of Doctors’ Health in Queensland (DHQ), is the President of the Queensland Medical Women’s Society (QMWS) and was commissioned by the Australian Medical Association Queensland (AMAQ) to create and present the “Resilience on the Run” and “Wellbeing at Work” programs. Funding from Queensland Health has made these programs available to all interns in Queensland since 2017. Resilience on the Run has received the AMA 2018 “Best Public Health Initiative” award.

These experiences and being the mother of two teenage daughters makes that she can relate to specific struggles younger people go through. Junior doctors and medical students have a special place in her heart and she hopes to empower them all to lead their best lives. Travelling and her 2 guinea pigs are the other passion projects in her life.

Dr Emmily Bueno de Mesquita

Dr Emmily was born in South America, in a country called Suriname. She moved to the Caribbean island Aruba, when she was 8 years old. After finishing school she completed her medical degree and psychiatry specialty training in the Netherlands (Maastricht and Amsterdam). After completing a few more years of Australian training to get her overseas training recognised, she is now a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and she works both in public and private health.

Dr Emmily Bueno de Mesquita lives and works on the Gold Coast, where she is an inpatient consultant on an acute adult mental health ward and she enjoys the privilege of one day a week private practice, where she is able to more fully utilise her skills in the art and science of psychiatry. She is passionate about health professionals’ wellbeing and she has started her own business for personal and professional development retreats, specifically tailored to health professionals. She enjoys the opportunity to provide supervision and mentoring and she provides regular educational sessions for the medical universities on the Gold Coast.

In her free time, Emmily enjoys Latin dancing, going for bush-walks with her family, self care activities like getting a relaxation massage, going out for dinner and/or practicing mindfulness and socialising with friends. She enjoys the outdoors and is happy she is now able to enjoy a Gold Coast winter in which she needs not worry about snow or frostbite.
